Typing Speed Test

Measure your typing speed and accuracy — timed tests, word sprints, and quotes, with live WPM, per-letter feedback, and a detailed results screen. Works with any keyboard layout.

Personal bests are stored on this device only. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.

Start typing the words above and the test begins on your first keystroke — no start button, no countdown screen. The timer, your live WPM, and your accuracy run across the top while the word stream below shows every letter as you type it: correct letters turn solid, wrong ones turn red, and extra letters appear where you overshot. When the test ends, a results screen breaks down exactly what happened — net and raw speed, accuracy, consistency, and a curve of your speed across the run.

How the test measures you

WPM (words per minute) follows the standard convention: five correct characters count as one word, so correct characters ÷ 5 ÷ minutes is your net speed. Raw WPM counts everything you typed, mistakes included — the gap between raw and net is the price of your errors. Accuracy is correct keystrokes over total keystrokes, measured as you go, so a 96% run at 60 WPM is a genuinely different result from a 60 WPM run at 88%. Consistency looks at how steady your raw speed was second by second — a smooth 55 is different from a spiky 30-then-80, and the number shows it.

Three mode families cover the ways people actually practice. Timed tests (15, 30, 60, 120 seconds) are the classic sprint — 30 seconds is the standard quick check. Word counts (10, 25, 50) finish when you finish, which suits building endurance without watching a clock. Quote mode types a real sentence with punctuation and capital letters, which is closer to everyday typing than random words are. Your personal best for each mode is kept locally in your browser.

Typing mechanics

Space submits the word and moves the caret forward; backspace corrects inside the current word. Extra letters beyond a word’s length are recorded (they count against raw speed) up to a small cap, so a held-down key can’t flood the stream. The test works with any keyboard layout — Dvorak, AZERTY, Arabic, Colemak — because it compares characters, not physical keys, and the words match the page language: English, French, or Arabic, with the stream laying out right-to-left on Arabic pages.

The stream scrolls line by line as you type, a caret marks the next letter, and a progress bar tracks the run — a countdown fill for timed sprints, the word count for the others. The moment the typing area loses focus the test pauses behind a click-to-resume overlay (Esc pauses on purpose), and refocusing picks up exactly where the clock stopped, so an interruption never costs you seconds.

On phones and tablets the typing area opens the on-screen keyboard the moment you tap it, and the same letter-by-letter feedback works at thumb-typing speed.

Your results stay on your device

Nothing about your typing leaves the browser. Personal bests live in local storage per language and mode; there is no leaderboard, no account, and no telemetry beyond the anonymous page-view analytics this site runs everywhere. Restart (or the Tab key, the classic trainer shortcut) generates a fresh test with new words, so re-running never trains you to memorize one stream.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good typing speed? Around 40 WPM is average for casual typing, 60–70 is solid professional range, and 100+ is fast. Accuracy above 95% is the goal at any speed — speed built on backspacing is slower than it looks.

Why five characters per word? It is the long-standing industry convention: average English words plus the space that follows them average about five characters, so it normalizes fairly across texts.

Can I test in French or Arabic? Yes — switch the site language in the header and the test uses that language’s word pool and quotes.

Does it work offline? After the page has loaded, yes — the test itself is pure client-side JavaScript.
