Tool

Lorem Ipsum Generator

Generate placeholder text in five shapes — paragraphs, sentences, words, exact character counts, and list items — as plain text, HTML, or Markdown, with reproducible seeds, shareable state links, and a live typography preview. Everything runs locally in your browser.

Generated text

Seed

Generated entirely on your device — nothing is sent to a server. Only your settings are stored locally, so a reload reproduces the same text.

Pick a shape, press Generate, and the panel fills with placeholder text built from the classical lorem ipsum vocabulary. The controls on the left decide what you get — paragraphs for an article mockup, list items for a navigation or FAQ skeleton, an exact character count for testing truncation — and the panel on the right shows the result with live statistics. Everything is generated on your device by a static page: nothing is sent, logged, or stored beyond your own settings.

Five shapes, three formats

The shape tabs choose the unit of output. Paragraphs produces flowing blocks separated by blank lines, the default for layout and CMS mockups. Sentences hands you complete sentences joined on one line. Words gives a word stream for labels, tags, and keyword-slot mockups. Characters is the precision instrument: it promises an exact length, cut mid-word if that is what the count demands, which is exactly what truncation and overflow tests need. List items generates capitalized fragments with no terminal punctuation, ready to drop into menus, cards, or option lists.

Every shape can be rendered as plain text, HTML, or Markdown. The HTML output is deliberately semantic — p elements for paragraphs, a ul with li children for lists — so it pastes straight into a template without cleanup. Markdown uses hyphen bullets for lists and blank-line paragraph separation, matching what a Markdown file expects.

The classic opening, or not

By default the first paragraph opens with the traditional “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit…” sentence that typesetters have used since the sixteenth century. Turn the classic start off and every sentence is generated fresh — useful when the familiar opening would make a mockup look stale, or when you want to see how the layout behaves with text that has no famous anchor. In the words and characters shapes the toggle controls whether the canonical opening words lead the output; in list mode the first item becomes the six-word “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet” fragment.

Deterministic when you need it to be

Every generation is driven by a 32-bit seed shown in the Reproducibility section. The same seed with the same settings always produces the same text, byte for byte — so a screenshot, a bug report, or a visual-regression test can pin a layout to one exact block of placeholder text. Press New seed (or Generate) to roll a fresh one.

The Share button copies a link that carries your entire state — shape, amount, format, style, seed, even the typography settings — in the URL fragment. Opening that link reproduces the exact same output on any machine, because the fragment is never sent to a server; it is read locally by the page itself.

A typography preview, not just a dump

Placeholder text exists to judge typography, so the plain-text surface is a live preview: choose a sans, serif, or monospace typeface and a size from 14 to 24 pixels to see how the block really sets at your intended measure. The HTML and Markdown formats switch the surface to a mono source view, since what you want from them is copyable markup, not a rendering.

What the numbers mean

The statistics row counts the generated text, not the markup: the same generation reports the same numbers in every format. Characters are Unicode code units of the plain rendering; sentences are sentence-terminating periods; the reading time assumes 200 words per minute, a common editing pace. The numbers update on every control change, so you can dial in “about a two-minute read” before the real copy exists.

Frequently asked questions

Why Latin? The lorem ipsum passage is a scrambled fragment of Cicero’s De finibus bonorum et malorum from 45 BC, repurposed because its letters are evenly distributed and its words carry no meaning to distract a reviewer from the layout. This generator draws from the canonical ~160-word vocabulary that classical generators share.

Can I get exactly 500 characters? Yes — switch to the characters shape and set the amount to 500. The output is cut to precisely that length, even if the cut lands mid-word; that is what exact means.

Does it work offline? Yes. The page and its script are static assets; once loaded you can disconnect and keep generating. There is no account, no quota, and no analytics beyond anonymous page-view counting.

How do I reproduce yesterday’s text? Keep the seed (or the share link). The same seed plus the same settings always regenerates the identical output.
